The studio is on the cusp of triggering production on the Gary Sanchez project Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, a dark action movie that picks up with the fairy tale siblings years after the traumatic childhood incident has turned them into bounty hunters. Jeremy Renner, who has been attached for some time, finally has his sister in James Bond babe Gemma Arterton.
Director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) is hoping to begin shooting the project in Berlin March 7.
Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Eva Green (Casino Royale) and Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) were all possibilities. But CAA-repped Arterton, who starred in Tamara Drewe, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Clash of the Titans in 2010, ultimately snagged the part.
Scheduling, as always, has been in an issue, since Renner is committed to shoot his role in MarvelÂ’s The Avengers just eight weeks after he does ParamountÂ’s Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Witch Hunters will thread the needle between them.
Paramount is also hustling H&G forward to try and get ahead of FoxÂ’s adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which director Timur Bekmambetov will begin shooting in 3D this year for a June 22, 2012 release. The $69-million project, which Seth Grahame-Smith is adapting from his own book and Tim Burton is producing, concerns the fictional efforts of president Abraham Lincoln to keep the bloodsuckers from preying on slaves.
Paramount has nothing but huge projects running out the summer and into the fall/winter of 2011, so H&G could be hustled into a Halloween window slot. The studio already has its blockbuster low-budget Paranormal Activity franchise moving toward a threequel on Oct. 21, opposite Warner Bros.Â’ all-star Steven Soderbergh action thriller Contagion. Then Lionsgate has set the Sam Raimi-produced creeper Dibbuk Box for Oct. 28.
If not, a cold-weather January opening could be just the season to hunt audiences looking for some hard-R fairy tale violence.

saat melihat judulnya dikira menceritakan tentang hansel & gretel yang menemukan rumah kue jahe.. sempat kaget pemerannya kok orang dewasa .

setelah melihat reviewnya ternyata mengisahkan tentang perjalanan dua bersaudara Hansel dan Gretel.yang mengalami masa kecil traumatis lalu saat dewasa keduanya malah menjadi pembunuh bayaran. \t

iya kirain cerita kartun ahhaha

GEMMA ARTERON: Yes, it continues it. You see a series of flashbacks with their experience of killing that first witch, which is brilliant. I remember being on set for the final few days of that. The candy house, and the witches are really repulsive and quite frightening. The makeup is out of this world. ItÂ’s this bone-chilling scene. Very dark. The girl who plays my character is brilliant, with the horrified expression she has.

Folktales like this have been told over and over again, changing every time. WhatÂ’s the constant that your movie picks up?
They resonate with your fears, thatÂ’s how these fairy tales worked. They scared you into behaving. This one in particular is about abandonment and being lost and parents leaving you. The heart of it is that these kids grow up to be bloodthirsty witch hunters. ItÂ’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, really. What would Hansel and Gretel be in 15 years time?

Though itÂ’s comedic, deep down itÂ’s about abused kids becoming kind of hyper-responsible?
But itÂ’s also very, very dark, and bloodthirsty and thereÂ’s a lot of cursing. ItÂ’s kind of got a [Quentin] Tarantino feel, really.

Interesting. So instead of Jules and Vincent, we have Hansel and Gretel. And beyond being killers, theyÂ’re siblings who feel they need to protect each other?
We spent a lot of time thinking about that and behaving like brother and sister, making it detailed so it wasnÂ’t just two actors kicking butt, really. That would get boring. In our minds, these are two people who grew up with no parents and they only have each other and the bond they have, and with the complexities of that, some resentment.

They would be pretty messed up, come to think of it. After nearly being eaten Â…
They had to murder somebody when they are kids! So itÂ’s all about being tough. Jeremy and I found within the script moments where we showed the vulnerable side of them. Often in action movies, people are scared to put that in. I think it was important. Just a couple moments, tender moments, when the guard drops, then you understand.

What differentiates the brother and sister?
Gretel is much more in tune with her spiritual side. Hansel is a typical action hero, cheeky, funny, a womanizer. SheÂ’s much more of a thinker, intense, internal and bit more open-minded than he is.

Renner says his Hansel is like Han Solo. Is Gretel a tough wisekracker, too? Or is she Chewbacca?
Even though Gretel is very tough and can handle herself, sheÂ’s still a girl. [Laughs.] SheÂ’s got feminine ways.
